Essential oils are a must have in every home. We use them in our every day life to support our physical, emotional and spiritual healing and nourishment. We only use Pure, Therapeutic Grade essential oils, because we believe it’s important to use only the best. doTERRA’s essential oils are free from fillers, synthetics, fragrances, perfumes and pesticides. They are 100% pure Essential Oils.
Not all essential oils are made equally.
There are 3 types of essential oils:
- Aromatic Essential Oils
- Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils
- Independently tested therapeutic grade essential oils.
Aromatic essential oils are used for their scent and aromatic purposes. You can find them at health food stores just about anywhere. Unfortunately, these essential oils are not therapeutic grade and should not be used topically or internally. These oils are usually synthetic, harmful to our body and have no therapeutic benefit whatsoever.
Therapeutic grade essential oils are produced by many companies with the intent to heal topically and aromatically. It is important to always read the label, to ensure they aren’t diluted with synthetic chemicals or other additives.
Independently tested therapeutic grade essential oils are tested at independent labs with tests such as gas chromatography and mass spectrometry to verify their purity and composition. Oils that meet rigorous testing and are considered safe by the FDA my be considered for topical use. It is important to only use oils internally, when they are labelled as “generally recognised as safe” by the FDA.
When it comes to your health, only the highest quality essential oils should be used for physical, emotional and spiritual healing.
It is important to note that dilution of essential oils is recommended for topical application. As a general guideline, we dilute:
- For young children, 1 drop of essential oil to 10ml of carrier oil.
- For older children (6+) 1 drop of essential oil to 5ml of carrier oil.
- For adults, 1-2 drops per 2ml of carrier oil.
We dilute our essential oils with fractionated coconut oil, as it absorbs into the skin more readily than other oils and leaves your skin feeling soft and grease free.
If you happen to have too much of an oil, or have sensitive skin, dilute further with any carrier oil, even cooking oil, or milk, to relieve the skin. Never use water, as this drives the oil further into your skin.
Where NOT to apply Essential Oils
Essential Oils should never be put in the eyes, nose or inner ear. These places are far too sensitive. Instead, you can apply exterior to these places or via reflexology points on hands or feet.
When using Essential Oils in a bath, be sure to avoid hot or caustic oils. The oils sit on top of the water, and come in contact with your skin. Using hot oils in this way can cause skin irritation.
It is also important to note that citrus essential oils will increase photo-sensitivity of the skin if used topically. As a general rule, avoid direct sunlight for 12-24 hours after applying these oils topically.
Essential oils are pure magic. They have transformed my life and continue to amaze me the more I work with them. I am truly inspired and in complete awe of the natural healing capabilities of the beautiful plants available to us. Nature intended us to have what we need on hand to heal. While I may not be able to take a herb garden with me everywhere I go, I can take the highest quality essential oils with me to support me on my journey.
