When someone new is introduced to the amazing world of Essential Oils, I’m often asked what the differences between humidifiers, vaporisers and diffusers are, and which one I personally use. Today we will cover all of that!
I’m going to start by saying, that the only choice in our home, is diffusers. Not only do they emit the beautiful oils you choose to put in them, but they have many benefits. Diffusers work by breaking the Essential Oil particles down into micro-molecules & then diffusing them into the air as negative ions. Negatively charged ions will attach themselves to harmful positively charged particles in the air & help to purify your home.
Ever wondered what the go is, with positively and negatively charged ions? Check out this article here
- Helps reduce bacteria, fungus, mold and unpleasant odors.
- Relaxes the mind and body; relieves tension, anxiety and stress.
- Aids with grief management.
- Improves concentration, alertness and mental clarity.
- Helps control mental and physical fatigue
There are so many diffusers out there to choose from, with each diffuser having slightly different capabilities. The important things to look for when purchasing a diffuser are:
Water capacity – The bigger the water capacity, the longer the diffuser can run for. When I first started with Essential Oils, I thought that bigger was better. The truth is, you don’t need to have an 12 Litre tank for a diffuser to do it’s job. My favourite diffuser (aroma bloom) has a 200ml capacity and can run for 8 hours continuous or 18 hours intermittent. This is plenty, allowing me to change what I’m diffusing easily and as regular as I want.
No Heat Source – A diffuser should NOT have a heat source, as this destroys the beneficial compounds in the Essential Oils, making them nothing more than a smell. There are many cheap diffusers on the market that say they are ultrasonic diffusers, but they end up running so hot, the diffuser itself feels warm. It’s best to find a good quality, reputable diffuser, even if you pay a little bit more for it, than buying a cheap, ineffective diffuser that destroys the quality of your oils.
Output – This is where EO Addicts tend to have a healthy debate on which diffuser is best. The truth is, it all depends on how many diffusers you wish to run in your house, how big the area is and how strong you want the aroma to be. For example, the diffuser we use the most, has an output of 25-30 sq/m. We have one in the lounge, and one in each bedroom. They work well in our home, dispersing the aroma evenly.
Cool Extras – If you are wanting a diffuser that can take you to the moon, you will be disappointed. However, you can get cool built in functions like dimming lights, coloured lights, no light options, intermittent settings and in built safety functions, like turning itself off when it’s empty. You don’t need all of the bells and whistles, but sometimes it’s nice! We love using the dimming light function in the bedroom for wind down time, before turning it off for bed. It’s also a fantastic night light for little ones, adjusting it to a brightness that suits.
A Humidifier is a device that is used for keeping the atmosphere moist in a room. It helps to prevent dryness that can cause irritation in many parts of the body such as treating dry skin, nose, throat and lips. Most often people use a humidifier to help with cold and flu symptoms by relieving sinus congestion. Most humidifiers are not built for using essential oils, and over time they can damage plastic components which is unsafe and unhealthy.
A Vaporiser is a device that generates a particular substance in the form of vapour, especially medicinal inhalation. A vaporiser works by heating water until it turns into hot steam. You can make your own vaporiser by bringing a pot of water to a boil, add a drop of essential oil, place a towel over your head and inhale the steam. Extreme heat can break down the therapeutic qualities of essential oils, so I like to enjoy the steam on it’s own at first, before adding a drop to the water after it has cooled for several minutes.
